Page 8   Design décor & A na and Brandon Wells recently brought their longtime dream to fruition. The young couple designed an exquisite, yet modern shop based around not only who they are, but everything they hold dear. It all came together in November, when they opened UrbAna, a home and entertaining store, in Arcadia. Brandon and Ana met in college almost 10 years ago. Originally from Portland, Oregon, Brandon had come to Phoenix to open the Scottsdale Tommy Bahama store, where he was a store opener and trainer. After deciding he liked the city, he decided to step away from his job and attend ASU. Ana, born in Tucson, had moved all over the country as a child but returned to Arizona to attend college at ASU. Throughout college, Ana and Brandon were good friends. “One day, I came home from work and Ana was at my house,” said Brandon. “She had broken up with her boyfriend and we just...were off to the races!” The transition from friends to something more came naturally. Seven years ago, the two were married. They now have two young sons, Jackson (3) and Ryder (1). When they first became a couple, Brandon worked in commercial real estate and Ana worked at Anthropology, a national women’s clothing and home décor store known for its unique style and commitment to philanthropy. Ana moved up the ranks quickly within Anthropology, working at most of the stores in the Phoenix area. Within a year of opening the Mesa store, she was promoted to store manager. To Brandon, it was obvious Ana was working for a good company. “They are a great place to cultivate passion,” said Brandon. “The way they treated their customers and the way they educated their employees was excellent.” Throughout their seven- year marriage, the young couple had often discussed their dreams and hopes for their future. Owning their own business was part of their plan. Finding a journal, which once belonged to Brandon’s grandmother, helped inspire what is now UrbAna. In 1942, Brandon’s grandparents, Cy and Hazel Wells lived in Waco, Texas. In a treasured photograph (left), his grandmother, with perfectly pinned back hair and dressed in a nice blouse, paints an old window shutter. To protect her elegant attire, she wears a small, well-pressed apron. Ana was intrigued by the formal approach to life, which had been lost over the generations. In the journal, Brandon and Ana found details of every dinner and event Hazel had ever thrown. They were her entertaining diaries and held such specifics as who was coming, what the event was for, what was being served and the china and glasses that were to be used. “It sparked this inspiration of elegant dinner parties of the ’50s with a modern esthetic,” said Ana. Hazel Wells’ entertaining diaries served as a jumping off point for Brandon and Ana. They knew they wanted to own a store where Ana could do what she had always done, talk with people about products she believed in and enjoyed. Their love of entertaining for friends and family, along with Hazel’s detailed accounts of her own parties, brought everything together. After having their second son last year, Ana returned to Anthropology on a part-time basis. Brandon had left his job in preparations to be a stay-at-home dad, but the couple decided Ana would leave her longtime career and begin plans for her own store. Anthropology was very supportive. “Working for Anthropology, they give you ownership of the store and give you the ability to grow the store. It gave me the confidence to know I could do it on my own,” said Ana. “And when I left, they were happy for me.” With bright light coming through the windows facing 44th Street, glassware, serving platters and home décor lines the walls as Ana walks the UrbAna space, speaking to her customers. Brandon stands back and takes in the scene before him. “I’ve been watching her do this for seven years,” said Brandon. “She’s so good at what she does; she amazes me.” Ana’s product knowledge, passion and connection with the customers are obvious.
