4 Camp Guide 2020 ARIZONA SCIENCE CENTER 600 E. Washington St., Phoenix Admission: Adults $18; kids 3-17 $13; 2 and under free. Members are free. Explore an entire building full of interactive science exhibits, including an IMAX theater and a trip to the stars in the planetarium. Permanent exhibits include the American Airlines Flight Zone, where guests can experience the science behind flying and Get Charged Up, an exhibit where kids can get hands-on with science. For more: azscience.org. AZ ICE ARCADIA Desert Palms Power Center: 3853 E. Thomas Road, Phoenix Admission: $9.50 for adults 13 and up, $8.50 for 12 and under, $6.50 for adults over 55 and students with an ID. Veterans and active members of the military skate for free. All skate rentals are $3.50. We all reach a breaking point in the summer where we want to get as far away from the heat as possible. Cooling off happens instantly in AZ Ice Arcadia, where you can strap on your skates and fly around the ice. Public skating, lessons, youth hockey league and day camps are available. Test your strength and endurance at AZ on the Rocks indoor rock- climbing studio. After a short training course, visitors can climb over 14,000 square feet of space over 20 feet high. McClintock Dr., Tempe Admission: General admission tickets are $34 for adults, $24 for kids. Open daily from May through August 6. Wash off the summer heat with the cold waters of Big Surf. BUTTERFLY WONDERLAND 9500 E. Via de Ventura, Scottsdale Admission: $21.95 for ages 18-61. $13.95 for ages 2-12. Next door to OdySea Aquarium is a chance to learn about the beautiful lives of butterflies. Visitors can get up close and personal with butterflies, but also with the reptiles and amphibians that coexist with them in the rainforest. There’s also a 3D theater plus several other exhibits on different kinds of wildlife. For more: butterflywonderland.com. CAMELBACK MOUNTAIN Echo Canyon Recreation Center: 4925 E. McDonald Dr., Phoenix Cholla Trail: 6131 E. Cholla Lane, Phoenix A hike up Camelback Mountain may be just the kind of outdoor adventure for you. The trails are open from sunrise to sunset. It’s recommended that hikers get there early in the summertime. Bobby’s Rock Trail is perfect for a pleasant stroll up the mountain, while more difficult paths can be found on the Echo Canyon Summit and Cholla Trails. Dogs are not allowed on the trails. Castles N’ Coasters boasts 20 rides and attractions, mini-golf, 150+ arcade and pinball games, plus five different places to get food and drinks. Folks can get an unlimited pass and head to the roller coaster, interactive rides, go-karts, a funhouse, bumper boats and then grab a bite to eat to settle your stomach from all the fun. For more: castlesncoasters.com. CHILDREN’S MUSEUM OF PHOENIX 215 N. 7th St., Phoenix Admission: $14.95 a person, 62 years and older $13.95. Free for members and children under the age of 1. This museum focuses on learning through play, with an emphasis on early childhood education and school-readiness. The museum has 48,000 square feet of hands-on, interactive exhibits designed for kids up to 10 years old. For more: childrensmuseumofphoenix.org. DESERT BOTANICAL GARDEN 1201 N. Galvin Pkwy., Phoenix Admission: $30 for adults, $15 for kids. Along with a plethora of signature events, there’s always something going on at Desert Botanical Garden. Guests can walk along five different trails while admiring flora and fauna of our environment. Check out the Cactus Clubhouse for kids or the Spring Butterfly exhibit, and when you get hungry, there are a couple of restaurants on the grounds. For more: dbg.org. ESCAPE THE ROOM AZ 7017 E. Main St., Scottsdale Admission: Starts at $30 a person. Hours are Monday through Thursday from 12-11 p.m. and Saturday and Sunday from 9 a.m.-11 p.m. Put your brain muscles to work and test your skills at Escape the Room AZ. There are five themed rooms at this location: Jurassic Escape, The Agency, Western Bank Heist, Submarine and The Dig. Each room has instructions and clues to help you escape, but you must hurry: You only have 60 minutes to solve the puzzles and make it out. For more: escapetheroom.com. GREAT WOLF LODGE 7333 N. Pima Road, Scottsdale Admission: starts at $55 for a half-day pass. If the heat is just too much, head to the Valley’s indoor water park at Great Wolf Lodge for the day. Folks can enjoy the 84-degree park and over 50 different activities. Swimming pools, basketball hoops, floating lily pads, slides, a lazy river, hot tubs and a kids play place are just a few of the amenities guests can enjoy. For more: greatwolf.com. HALL OF FLAME FIRE MUSEUM 6101 E. Van Buren St., Phoenix Admission: $10 for adults, $8 for students 6-17, $4 for ages 3-5, free for children under 3. This museum houses various fully restored pieces of fire apparatus, dating from 1725 to 1969. There are multiple exhibits at the 75,000-square- foot facility, including a gallery dedicated to the history of wildland firefighting in the United States and a 9-11 display. The museum also offers tours. For more: hallofflame.org. HARKINS SUMMER MOVIE FUN If you’re willing to wake up early, you can go to the movies this summer for super cheap. Harkins Summer Movie Fun lets kids 12 and under enjoy a movie a week for ten weeks, for less than $1 per film. You can buy single-day tickets or season tickets. Adult tickets are the same price, but an adult and child have to go with each other to the movie. This children’s museum contains over 20,000 square feet of engaging, interactive space, including ArtVille, a larger-than-life art town designed to help children develop their artistic side. The museum also offers a spring and summer camp, plus ArtVille Academy, an eight-week program for kids 3 to 5. For more: ideamuseum.org. iFLY INDOOR SKYDIVING 9206 E. Talking Stick Way, Scottsdale Admission: The first-time flyer package starts at $59.95, but there are different packages available. Hours are Monday through Friday, 10 a.m.-7 p.m., and Saturday and Sunday, 8 a.m.-8 p.m. Have you ever wanted to try skydiving, but jumping out of a plane just isn’t your thing? Now you can fly without actually being in the sky. Through the science of wind tunnels, attendees can skydive without having to leave the building. LEGOLAND DISCOVERY CENTER 5000 Arizona Mills Cir., Tempe Admission: $17-$30. Free for children up to age 2. Hours are Monday through Saturday, 10 a.m.-7 p.m., and Sunday, 11 a.m.-6 p.m. You don’t have to drive to California to enjoy the fun of Legoland – there’s one right in your backyard. The Legoland Discovery Center has two rides, 10 build and play zones, exhibits, a 4D cinema, a Lego store, a factory tour and creative workshops. There’s no age limit to the fun happening at the Legoland Discovery Center. For more: legolanddiscoverycenter.com. MAIN EVENT ENTERTAINMENT 8545 S. Emerald Dr., Tempe Admission: Starts at $20 a person, but depends on activity and package rates. Hours are 11 a.m.-11 p.m., Sunday through Thursday, and until 1 a.m. on Friday and Saturday. If you’re looking for a place with a little variety and a lot of fun, Main Event might just be it. This establishment has 26 bowling lanes, arcade games, mini-golf, laser tag, gravity ropes, a rock-climbing wall and karaoke. There’s also a full-service restaurant and cocktails available for grown-ups. For more: mainevent.com. MEDIEVAL TIMES 9051 E. Vía de Ventura, Scottsdale Admission: $46 for adults, $36 for kids. Transport yourself to a time long ago at Medieval Times. Guests will get up close and personal with the queen and her royal staff while enjoying a four-course meal. But that’s not even the best part: guests can watch as the brave knights battle it out with jousting and weaponry shows, as well as a falconry and horse show. For more: medievaltimes.com. MUSICAL INSTRUMENT MUSEUM 4725 E. Mayo Blvd., Phoenix Admission: $20 for general admission, $15 for ages 13-19, $10 for children 4-12. Children 3 and under are free. The Musical Instrument Museum displays more than 6,500 instruments collected from around 200 countries. Guests experience the instruments through audio and video technologies, allowing visitors to see, hear and observe the instruments. If you’re looking for hands-on experience, guests can play instruments from all over the world in the Experience Gallery. For more: mim.org. PHOENIX POLICE MUSEUM Historic City Hall, 180 W. Jefferson St., 1st Floor, Phoenix Admission: free. Hours are 9 a.m.-3 p.m., Monday through Friday. The Phoenix Police Museum houses over 130 years of history starting in 1881 when Henry Garfias was elected as the first city marshal. There are multiple exhibits, old school police vehicles, weapons, a replica of the very first jail cell, and you can even try on a Phoenix police uniform. For more: phxpdmuseum.org. PHOENIX ZOO 455 N. Galvin Pkwy., Phoenix Admission: $24.95 for adults, $16.95 for children. Free for children up to 2. A trip to the zoo is a perfect summer activity for the whole family. The Phoenix Zoo is home to over 1,400 animals, including 30 species that are endangered or threatened. Some of the occupants you can run into include African lions, flamingos, zebras, giraffes, warthogs, coyotes and several different kinds of monkeys. For more: phoenixzoo.org. SIX FLAGS HURRICANE HARBOR 4243 W. Pinnacle Peak Road, Glendale Admission: $38 if you buy advanced online ticket, $46 at the gate. This is the largest theme park in the state of Arizona. This family-friendly water park has more than 30 attractions, including slides, lazy rivers and different play areas. There are kid and family- themed rides, and larger rides for thrill seekers.
