10 Camp Guide 2022 re the speakers constantly bumpin’ at your house? Is there a room dedicated to instruments somewhere? Does your child know all the songs to Mamma Mia ? If so, a music camp could be the right choice this summer. Here are four camps dedicated to keepin’ the tunes flowing: MUSIC MAKER WORKSHOPS; SUMMER MUSIC CAMP 3233 E. Chandler Blvd., Phoenix Age: 5-10 Time: 9 a.m.-12 p.m. Dates: June 13-July 21 Fee: $185 This one is only a half-day camp, but it still packs lots of fun and music into those three hours! For a total of five days, campers will get to try their hands at a new instrument: piano, guitar, ukulele, violin, voice or drums. Each week, there are different themes, such as Fiesta Fun and Crazy Country Western, with activities, games, giveaways, crafts, contests and teacher features mixed with learning or practicing an instrument. mmwaz.com MUSICAL INSTRUMENT MUSEUM 4725 E. Mayo Blvd., Phoenix Age: Pre-K-12 th grade Time: Times vary Fee: Museum admission is $20, classes are separate. The Musical Instrument Museum houses 8,000 instruments from more than 200 countries around the world. While they don’t have a specific summer camp, they offer music classes and activities year- round and for every age group. Kids up to five years old can enjoy Mini Music Makers class. Here, kids explore music from around the globe while singing, dancing and playing instruments. Designed for children and caregivers, each class explores a new musical culture and touches on motor, pre-language and musical skills. $12 per class. Ages 6-10 can pick up an MIMkids Passport and embark on a journey with MIMkids Musical Adventures, where attendees can discover new cultures by actively participating in music-making, crafting musical instruments, and exploring MIM’s exhibits. Each class focuses on a different continent and music from around the world, with an opportunity to collect MIMkids passport stamps. $12 per class. Students in grades 6 through 12 can become Junior Museum Guides. Students can learn about cultures while also participating in music- making. Junior Guides will train to lead tours while exploring MIM’s galleries and exhibits. Participants who complete all four classes will have the opportunity to lead group tours for upcoming events. $40 per session – four in total. mim.org SCHOOL OF ROCK SCOTTSDALE 13610 N. Scottsdale Road Age: 7-18 Time: 9 a.m.-3 p.m. Fee: $500 School of Rock offers music camps throughout the summer, focused on every genre imaginable: classic rock, punk rock, pop hits, pop legends…the list is endless. Here are just a few examples: June 6-10, Modern Rock Camp: Students will learn and perform songs from some of the most popular artists of the 21st century, including Foo Fighters, Amy Winehouse, Imagine Dragons, Paramore and Red Hot Chili Peppers. Monday through Friday will be spent learning and rehearsing songs culminating in a live performance at the end of the week. June 13-17, Green Day Camp: Throughout this 5-day camp, students will explore hits from some of Green Day’s most popular albums, such as “Warning,” “Insomniac,” and “American Idiot.” At the end of the week, there will be a live performance. Great for students who have had some previous instruction. July 11-15, Songwriting and Recording Camp: Students will learn how to write their own songs by researching some of the greatest compositions of the last 60 years to develop their own tunes. Topics include chord progressions, arrangements and other tricks of the trade. Students will perform their original work at the end of the week. July 18-22, Beatles Camp: Celebrate the best songs from The Beatles’ collection of hits and Billboard-topping classics. Students will spend Monday through Friday learning and practicing songs and performing their own Beatles tribute at the end of camp. schoolofrock.com SUMMER COMPANY – MUSICAL THEATRE AND FINE ARTS CAMP Do Re Mi School of the Arts, 8050 E. Mountain View Road, Scottsdale Age: 4-8, 9-18 Time: 9 a.m.-1 p.m. for Fine Arts, 11 a.m.-1 and 4 p.m. for Musical Theatre Dates: July 11-30 Fee: $350-$500 for three-week sessions This camp is more about theater and performance, but music still plays a huge part! For those who want to dance, act AND sing, Do Re Mi might be the camp for you. The Fine Arts Camp focuses on theatre, music, dance, and art instruction. Kids aged 4-6 will learn song, dance and acting for songs and scenes from Peter Pan , and first/ second-grade students will learn songs and scenes from Hercules . The camp concludes with a full production. For the older kids, this 3-week summer camp engages students in a hands-on musical theatre experience, from auditioning, learning lines and staging the show with props, lights and costumes. Third through eighth-graders will produce Grease , and ninth-12 th graders will produce Urinetown . Below are five camps so youngsters can tumble, throw, climb and dunk throughout the summer. This year’s campers will experience basketball, baseball, football, volleyball, floor hockey, soccer, even lacrosse. Each day begins with team meetings, prizes and a theme of the day. Then, it’s game time. Campers will practice and play actual games, pick-up games, and have free playtime. Campers will be in small groups and rotate through various activities, including structured gymnastics events like vault, bars, beam, Tumble Track, Ninja Zone and open gym. Campers will learn the tips and tricks behind a successful baseball game, take lots of swings and learn the fundamentals of the sport. This camp will be hosted in the Colorado Rockies Batting Cages and the adjacent field. Each camper will receive a camp t-shirt and a chance to win fun prizes throughout the week.
