3 The Shemer Art Center was originally part of 640 acres owned by a group of investors who had visions of selling plots of land for citrus farming and homesteading. These investors called the area Arcadia, founded the Arcadia Water Company and began digging wells. In 1919, the first “Arcadia” home was built for the foreman in the field. In the 1920s, those original investors went broke. The home changed hands throughout the years, and in 1984, was purchased by Martha Shemer, a real estate investor who was looking to buy a property she could give to the community. Fast forward 40 years, and the Shemer Art Center has grown and thrived in that very spot. The nonprofit holds classes for kids and adults, art workshops and lectures, exhibits – including the New Horizons High School exhibit that showcases our young artists – and events throughout the year.
